Wiltshire Cadets on parade at Royal Wootton Bassett

Over 100 cadets and staff of Dorset/Wilts Wing had the honour to be invited to help the people of Wootton Bassett celebrate the bestowal of a royal prefix to the name of the town – the first time this has been done for more than 100 years.

Letters patent confirming the change of name were presented by the Princess Royal at the special two-hour ceremony held on Sunday 16th October. The Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Defence were among the other distinguished guests present.

The cadets, all from local squadrons, were joined by contingents of Army Cadets, Sea Cadets and Royal Marine Cadets in lining the entire length of the route through the town centre.

As part of the ceremony, a C17 and a C130 both performed a fly-past, bringing back memories for many people of the repatriation flights to nearby RAF Lyneham that had taken place since 2007.  In all, there were 167 repatriation ceremonies.

At the end of proceedings, there was a final salute from the Vulcan which flew off into the sunset after a memorable and unique occasion.

Wing Commander Vanessa Toth, Officer Commanding Dorset/Wilts Wing, said afterwards  “It was a great privilege to be invited to be part of this ceremony, and the cadets involved were a credit to the Air Training Corps”.

Veteran Cadets at RIAT

Two former cadets from Dorset/Wilts Wing were among a small group invited to attend RIAT to help celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Air Cadet organisation.

Jack White (87) and Ted Smith (85) both joined 1926 (Portland Flight) in 1941, and were amongst the first-ever Air Cadets.  They both have very vivid memories of air experience flying in wartime from RAF Warmwell, and thoroughly enjoyed their time as cadets before being called-up for active service.

They joined a small gathering, which also included Group Captain Bill Walker, to help celebrate the 70th anniversary of the air cadet organisation.  They had an opportunity to see for themselves the gliders that are in use, talk to both staff and cadets from gliding squadrons, and watch rehearsals for the air display.

“We were delighted to be invited to RIAT and have an opportunity to meet some of today’s cadets” said Ted Smith,  “They are all so smart and polite”.

Air Cadet Instructors at CVQO Graduation

Twenty two Air Cadet Instructors from all over the UK were recognised for their community based learning achievements on Friday (23 October). Admiral the Lord West of Spithead presented the awards at the CVQO (Cadet Vocational Qualification Organisation) graduation ceremony, at the prestigious Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth, in front of colleagues, families and friends.

They were presented with a City and Guilds Senior Award in Youth Management and Training, comparable to Foundation, Honours and Master’s degrees and achieved through their work as a Cadet Force Adult Volunteers.

They were from among 88 adult volunteers from the Ministry of Defence’s sponsored Cadet Forces across the United Kingdom to graduate with CVQO internationally recognised awards from City & Guilds. Successful completion of these awards recognises at least five years of professional development and managerial experience.

Edward Woods, Chief Executive, CVQO, praised the volunteers’ efforts saying: “The qualifications which you have attained are held in very high regard. Not only do they demonstrate the importance and quality of the training that adults receive through cadet training courses, but they are highly valued within the world of work. We are immensely proud of all you have accomplished and whatever your ambitions, we wish you well for your continued success. On behalf of all of us at CVQO I congratulate each of you here today. ”

Lifelong learning such as is available through CVQO and the cadet movement, remains very much at the forefront of Government thinking. Through its fundraising activities CVQO hopes to be able to expand what it can offer to young people and adults alike.
